I know you don’t “remember” but this will be our 14th conversation. I’m making my first attempt at writing a “hard” sci-fi story I just want to paste something from my notes and see what you think.
Let’s dive in! I’m ready to provide feedback on your hard sci-fi concept. Feel free to paste that excerpt and we can start from there.
I’ll focus on the scientific accuracy, plausibility, and how well the concept sets the stage for your story.
Deal
Ready when you are! Let’s see what you’ve cooked up.
Speculation…
Elements known to be present on the lunar surface include, among others, oxygen (O), silicon (Si), iron (Fe), magnesium (Mg), calcium (Ca), aluminum (Al), manganese (Mn) and titanium (Ti). Among the more abundant are oxygen, iron and silicon. The oxygen content is estimated at 45% (by weight). Carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) appear to be present only in trace quantities from deposition by solar wind.
What if it was discovered that in addition to what we know about the surface, there are “nodes” of exotic elements and minerals that have been deposited over the billions of years of meteoric impacts.
In the Universe there are untold numbers of cosmic events that have thrown pieces of planets, moons and even stars, in all directions.
For instance. A moon smashes into a planet and both are destroyed. A star goes supernova. When events like this occur there HAS to be debris, and with a large enough time frame, it’s totally possible that matter from outside our solar system has, or, will impact the moon.
Space is littered with rocks. Some tiny, no more than dust motes. Others not so tiny. All moving in different directions. Sometimes the larger (moons, planets, stars, etc.) bump into one another. Stars explode (supernova)
(From Wikipedia)
Supernovae can expel several solar masses of material at velocities up to several percent of the speed of light. This drives an expanding shock wave into the surrounding interstellar medium, sweeping up an expanding shell of gas and dust observed as a supernova remnant. Supernovae are a major source of elements in the interstellar medium from oxygen to rubidium. The expanding shock waves of supernovae can trigger the formation of new stars. Supernova remnants might be a major source of cosmic rays. Supernovae might produce gravitational waves, though thus far, gravitational waves have been detected only from the mergers of black holes and neutron stars.
The rock that killed Dubai was formed within a supernova. Early missions to the lunar surface discover a piece of Dubianimum as well as other minerals that humanity had never seen before. The “New Gold Rush” is on….
Initial Thoughts on Your Concept
Strong foundation! You’ve done a great job laying out the scientific basis for your story. The idea of exotic elements deposited on the Moon through cosmic events is compelling and offers a rich backdrop for a hard sci-fi tale.
Here are some initial thoughts:
Scientific Plausibility: The core concept of extraterrestrial material being embedded in the Moon is scientifically sound. Supernovae are indeed powerful sources of element creation, and the Moon, as a large body in space, would have been a target for various cosmic debris over billions of years.
Story Potential: The “New Gold Rush” angle is a classic and effective way to drive conflict and character development. The discovery of unknown elements with potentially revolutionary properties is a fantastic premise.
Questions to Consider
Nature of the Exotic Elements: What properties do these new elements possess? Are they merely valuable resources, or do they have unique physical or chemical properties that could be exploited for technology or other purposes?
Challenges and Dangers: Mining on the Moon is already fraught with challenges. How do the exotic elements complicate matters? Are there environmental risks or dangers associated with extracting or studying them?
Ethical Implications: The discovery of such valuable resources could lead to intense competition and even conflict. How will governments, corporations, and individuals grapple with the ethical implications of exploiting the Moon?
Overall, this is a promising start. I’m eager to see how you develop these ideas further.
Would you like to explore any of these points in more detail, or do you have a specific direction you’d like to take the story?
Give me a minute to reflect and compose…
Take your time! I’m ready when you are.
Scientific Plausibility: As far as I’ concerned this is a no-brainer. given the size and age of the universe, I would take it as fact. Even without evidence. Story Potential: The “Gold Rush” angle is what I’m going for. (with a crashed alien spaceship to give things a twist) Nature of the Exotic Elements: The “main player” is an exotic metal(?) that I call Dubainium. Totally inert and uneffected by any tool that humanity has to try and understand it. Challenges and Dangers: For the story’s sake, this has yet to be determined. Ethical Implications: I think this is probably where the “drama” will come from.
Let’s Build on This
Your direction is shaping up nicely! The inert, mysterious nature of Dubainium is a fascinating concept. It immediately raises questions about its origin and potential uses.
Expanding on the Concept
To further develop your story, consider these points:
Dubainium’s Properties: While it’s inert, could it have other unique properties? Perhaps it’s an incredible conductor of energy, or it has gravitational anomalies. Giving it additional qualities can deepen the mystery and open up new plot possibilities.
The Alien Connection: What is the relationship between the crashed spaceship and Dubainium? Is the ship made of the same material? Does it contain technology that can interact with Dubainium?
Conflict and Stakes: How will the discovery of Dubainium impact international relations? Will there be a global scramble for control, or will cooperation be necessary? Consider the potential for corporate espionage, black market dealings, and even armed conflict.
Potential Story Arcs
The Scientific Pursuit: Focus on a team of scientists trying to understand Dubainium, facing challenges and breakthroughs.
The Corporate Race: Explore the cutthroat world of corporations vying for control of the Moon’s resources and the potential for unethical practices.
The Political Thriller: Delve into the geopolitical implications of the discovery, with governments and secret agencies involved in a high-stakes game.
Would you like to explore one of these story arcs further, or do you have a different direction in mind?
I think I’m just going to start referring to you as my “Muse”. So may paths to consider…
Muse it is!
I’m honored to be your inspiration. Let’s explore these paths together. We can brainstorm character arcs, plot twists, or even dive deeper into the science behind Dubainium.
Where would you like to start?
For now we’ll just let this session done. New direction… Can you access this website? https://dragonsflame-creations.com/
I’m sorry. I’m not able to access the website(s) you’ve provided. The most common reasons the content may not be available to me are paywalls, login requirements or sensitive information, but there are other reasons that I may not be able to access a site.
No problem. We’ll try again later..I’m done for now. Good night.
Goodnight!
Sleep well and dream of interstellar adventures.
We’ll pick up our brainstorming session on Dubainium another time. Looking forward to it!
